Detox Diets - Are They Safe?

In theory, detox diets seem to be all these good cleansing processes that could clear out toxins and gunk that have been sitting in your stomach. But are they really effective? Are they even good for your body?

Detox diets are meant to cleanse your internal system from toxins, poisons, and stuffs that are not supposed to be inside your system. This is facilitated by changing your diets a bit to make room for healthier digestive system-cleansing treats. This cleansing process is not limited to the digestive system though its effects reach even the bloodstream.

Now the body itself, by way of the liver and kidneys, processes these toxins and restricts them from flooding the body. But due to continuous exposure to such substances, this internal detoxification mechanism wears down and loses its effectiveness. So proponents of detox diets believe that human intervention can compensate through the use of detox diets.

There are many popular detox diets that are relatively safe. These are thought to purge the body's system such that internal homeostasis is achieved. Now, through the modification of diet such as fasting, liquid detoxification, and abstinence from certain types of foods that are believed to contain various types of toxins, the toxins that have already invaded even the cells, tissues, and organs of the body are believed to be flushed out. After this, the body's own cleansing system will kick in.

For the most part, this process is relatively safe. After a diet of say, lemon juice for three consecutive days, most of the solid wastes and toxic materials in the body will come out. Also, it is very effective.

The only setback that may occur through this process roots from improper re-introduction of regular foods after the cleansing process. People who have undergone the detoxification process often rush into eating normally after several days of missing solid foods. To prevent this from happening, one should begin slowly with light soup and proceed to eating digestion-challenging foods.
